Seasons Best Tips

When we are talking beauty, we need to make sure we are putting our face in the right hands. Just another sales person at your local beauty depot is not going to cut it. Thats why we went to Emmy Award Winning Make Up Artist and founder of Z Palette, Zena Shteysel for the seasons must-know tips.  Here what she told us:

1.  I love to use my eye shadows wet, to create a more dramatic look with intense color pay-off, or to transform any eye shadow into an eye liner.  I just spritz the eye shadow pan directly with water, I use Evian Facial Water Spray, it lets out just the right amount of moisture without drowning the shadow. The result is a vivid, more pigmented look.  Right now, I’m loving the Unum Makeup eye shadow range, they’re deeply saturated with color and blend like a dream. unumEyes by Unum Makeup www.unummakeup.com8007_bigger57e2fb80276d5f13c4de715a90e50677
2.  Full brows aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon.  To fake a fuller brow, I like to use a tinted brow pomade, like Anastasia dipbrow, and an angled brush, in short light strokes.  A great trick to repurpose a product you may already have: brown gel eyeliner can actually double as a great brow pomade, the finish is almost identical.  Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner in ‘Brown’.
3.  Ombre lips are dramatic, but totally wearable and give the appearance of a sexy, fuller lip.  To get the look, I like to use two distinct shades – one for the liner and one for the lips.  Start with the liner and fill in most of the lip, then blend the lipstick color starting in the center then feathering out. My favorite combo is lining the lips with Loreal’s Lip Le Matte #108 and filling in with Tarte’s LipSurgence Lucky in the middle.

4.  The “Baking” method for setting makeup has recently become a craze, but we’ve been baking on set for ages.  The trick to a good bake is to pick up a generous amount of your setting powder (Currently loving IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores HD micro-powder in ‘Translucent’)  with one of those inexpensive, disposable wedge sponges (it creates those perfect sharp lines!)and lightly “drag” the powder onto the face, wherever you laid down your highlight (under the eyes, below the cheek bones, center of forehead, chin, bridge of nose, etc.)  You don’t want to leave the powder on too long – basically by the time you’ve applied the powder everywhere you need to, it’s time to go back and lightly dust it off.  The result is a crease-less and flaw-less face.

Sleep More to Get Skinny?

Taking care of the inside is just as important as taking care of the outside.  Thats why, every week we will be bringing you some expert advice from Dr. Jeanne Wilson and Holistic Nutritionist Heather Wilson from East West Essentials.

Our bodies pull in toxins from the food we eat and the environment around us every single day. And while it is ideal to cleanse your body about four times a year with the East West Essentials Optimal Cleanse, there is also a trick that can help detoxify your body all year long. And it’s easy! Here’s all you have to do: Go to bed by 10:30 p.m. and make sure that you sleep in the dark.Yes, that’s it! This time is key to a successful sleep, which in turn allows the liver and other organs to fully detoxify the body and improve hormonal balance

In Chinese Medicine, we know that the liver cleanses the blood between 1 and 3 a.m. and you must already be in a deep sleep before 1 a.m. to get the full detoxification benefits of the liver energies.  Sufficient rest at the right time and following the body’s natural circadian rest rhythms of sleeping when dark and up with the light is essential for healthy metabolism – and a healthy metabolism helps control weight gain!

Maintaining natural rhythms of sleep and natural light and dark sleep patterns are essential and powerful for controlling your hormone levels.

So… did I just say that getting a good nights sleep at the proper time and observing the light and dark natural patterns of a natural environment (this means no TV or computers, rather a real “nighty-nite, lights off” just go to bed routine) will help you lose weight (especially if you are on a diet program) and make you feel emotionally better (improve anxiety and irritability as well as reducing PMS symptoms in women) and become a happier human being?

Yes, I did.

My best to you! –Dr. Jeanne Wilson

NYFW Street Style Favs

When we’re talking Fashion Week, we’re talking all of the most Fabulous, fashionable, free-styled people in world meeting at one place at one time.   While everyones eye is supposed to be on the runway,  you cannot deny the congregation of excellent style all in one place.  Street Style is an unstoppable force in the fashion industry.  I have picked my top favs from New York Fashion Week, the tip of the iceberg as we move to Europe.  What excites me the most is when people make it work with whatever they have, brand or no brand. Who doesn’t look amazing in Chanel, Celine, Stella McCartney or Jimmy Choo but the girl who can find classic pieces anywhere and take it to the next level is a friend of mine.

What we see off runway is what is happening in the real world. The girls moving and shaking are driving the trends. So what are they? We are seeing a lot of 70’s inspiration on the street. Lots of Stripes, Boho, Patterns, Fringe, Denim, High-Wasted everything, Jump Suits. Thats where its at for the fall and we love it!

If your craving a flat white, a Tim Tam, or some Lemmingtons, you’ve come to the right place. This Australian owned gem is situated in the perfect location, right off Larchmont Village at the intersection of Melrose Ave and Larchmont.  While the coffee shops in LA are abundant, it is hard to be set apart from the rest.  They really strive to deliver the ultimate experience from their intense coffee to the endless deli containing wholesome options available for breakfast and lunch.

The only tip I will offer is to please try their Sticky Bun! It is the most divine treat you will ever have.  The sticky bun is covered in brown sugar with a caramel center that is oh, so gooey.

Need a Weekend Getaway.. How about San Diego?

When you live in Los Angeles, you are basically already in paradise. In case you need to get away from the traffic, the noise and general hustle of each day try driving a little further south. San Diego is the perfect getaway for the sophisticated Angeleno, whether your trekking solo or taking the whole fam.  The pace slows down even more, if that is possible, and you are overcome with a peace that disconnects you from the rest of the world.

Where to Stay:

Porto Vista Hotel- Street View

Porto Vista Hotel is a no frills destination if you need a place to rest your head. This is the perfect hotel, centrally located in Little Italy, and gives you the opportunity to go out and explore what the city has to offer instead of feeling stuck in some fake resort world.

The Valet is quick to get your car and help with bags, directions, and anything else you need coming in or going out. The Lobby is adorned with vintage teak furniture that all comes together nicely in a retro vibe.
The ultimate perk of the hotel are breath-taking views of the port and the bay of the Pacific Ocean. There is a roof top terrace where you can enjoy a quite night in the perfect Southern California weather.

Where to Eat:

The Glass Door San Diego
The Glass Door San Diego

The Glass Door is on the top floor of the Porto Vista Hotel and has hightop tables that are perfect for a quite (and romantic) dinner as you overlook the harbor. Upon walking into the restaurant, you feel as though you are being transported to another country. The Food seals the deal and really does take you to another place. The cuisine was inspired by the taste of Moroccan and Ethiopian countries and everything was made to perfection.  My personal favorites for the evening were the Moroccan Spiced Scallops and The Short Rib.

If your looking for some good food while you are checking out the Gaslamp District, Barley Mash is an absolute must. Chef Jose shared that he loves to bring things from around the world and add a San Diego twist to the items offered.  Everything we had was incredible, but you have to try the Fish and Chips, which we were told was one of the more popular items from the Supper Menu. The El Chignon Mac n’ Cheese, San Diego Iron Fries, Surf N’ Turf Burger, and Tuna Poke were made to perfection!

Things to do:

We are not the ones to go to the Zoo or Sea World, but there are plenty of options if you are looking for some R&R. Here are my top picks:

Relax on the beach- When is this ever a bad thing. When you need to disconnect and unwind the Sea is so healing in so many ways.

Caves of La Jolla

Go Kayaking in the La Jolla Sea Caves– For the more adventurous souls, this is just a sight to be seen.

The San Diego Harbor at Night

Strolling along the San Diego Harbor-  We love the San Diego Harbor is great because its like walking through the History Channel as your walking through the Embarcadero.  It was the base headquarters for the US Navy before it was moved to Pearl Harbor just before World War II.  Now it houses the USS Midway Museum, while the San Diego Harbor does house many assets for the US Navy.  Its just cool.

Amazing Water in Coronado Island

Visit Coronado Island– Its a slim little peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego. You can take a ferry there, or there are some tours that take you there. Its a cute little town filled with cute shops, great beach, gardens and other sites to see.  There are no cars there, since its just a few blocks wide, but you can easily walk or rent a bike.
